About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

MDGS (Metadata and Discovery Group in Scotland) are pulling together a series of occasional online (and free) seminars, to be held at lunchtime. We have collated an interesting selection of talks, with a fascinating selection of topics with metadata at their heart, with many topics that we may not otherwise encounter. We are calling this series MDGS Bites, and the ninth one is ready to go!

The ninth MDGS Bites will be held online via Zoom on Wednesday, 30th July, from 12:30-1:30. The event is free of charge, but registration is essential.

MDGS is proud to invite you to a seminar entitled: Introducing inclusive terminology at the Moving Image Archive.

Our speaker for this event is Liam Patterson, Assistant Curator at the Moving Image, Sound and Music Collections of the National Library of Scotland. He will be talking about the gradual linear process of change from the start of 2020, as he and his team realised that they needed to take stock and reconsider some of the language used in their almost 50 year old catalogue. The start of this process coincided with Carissa Chew’s internship at the National Library of Scotland; they were fortunate to be able to use Carissa’s combined and expanding glossaries to reassess and change outdated terminology relating particularly to ethnicity and disability, and to prepare their catalogue for ongoing change in the future.

Liam trained as an archaeologist, worked as a video producer, retrained as a social historian – he now combines all of these skills, excavating social history from the films and videos in the national moving image collection.
