The workshop will be opened by Professor Nishan Canagarajah , Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester. You will then hear from Professor Simon Green, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Aston University and colleagues from the University of Birmingham, Keele University and the University of Warwick.

Contemporary Britain and the Midlands

Economically and socially the East and West Midlands combine many of the features of contemporary Britain:

At the heart of UK manufacturing, with growing life sciences, technology and creative industry sectors
Beyond our towns and cities, agriculture remains an important pillar of the economy
Our region contains some of the most disadvantaged postcodes in the UK, but also some of the wealthiest
Our region has some of the highest and lowest levels of ethnic diversity
The Midlands are growing demographically with a particularly young population

Co-create the research agenda

In this workshop and breakout sessions we want you to help us co-create the agenda that will inform the development and content of a significant new thematic research area for Midlands Innovation that focuses on three interlinked pillars:

Economic Renewal
Wellbeing and Prosperity
Social Diversity

This new research theme matters as it:

engages strongly with the Government's narrative on 'levelling-up'
engages with the UKRI increased focus on place and collaboration
increases opportunities for colleagues to use this platform to build new research collaborations and create successful funding bids.

Midlands Innovation is a collaboration between eight research intensive universities in the Midlands (Aston, Birmingham, Cranfield, Keele, Leicester, Loughborough, Nottingham and Warwick). Collectively we receive over 72% of innovation funding that flows to universities in the region.
