Alafia, Greetings & Welcome to London – and the Third International Indaba Gathering focussing on Rites of Passage organised in Partnership with International Rites of Passage Institute.

Following on from an extremely successful INDABA hosted by GTA Rites of Passage, The National Rites of Passage Institute (USA), and Wood Green Community Services (Canada), in 2016. New Initiatives Youth and community Association (UK) took hold of the baton to bring the next INDABA to London.

This two-day interactive cultural experience focussing on Afrocentric Rites of Passage processes will immerse those who attend in an exciting opportunity explore fresh knowledge, insights and practice.

WHAT is INDABA 2018?

INDABA 2018 is the third international Indaba Gathering focussing on Rites of Passage organised in partnership with International Rites of Passage Institute. Following on from an extremely successful Indaba hosted by GTA Rites of Passage, National Rites of Passage Institute, and Wood Green Community Services held in Canada in 2016. New Initiatives Youth and Community Association have taken hold of the baton to bring the Indaba to London. WHAT IS an indaba?

An indaba (pronounced in-dah-bah is an important conference held by the izinduna (principal men) of the Zulu or Xhosa peoples of South Africa (Such meetings are also practised in Swaziland). They may also be held with representatives of other communities.

In a nutshell, it is a gathering of people, designed to sort out the problems that affect them all, where everyone has a voice and where there is an attempt to find a common mind or a common story that everyone is able to tell when they go away from it.

WHAT ARE Rites of Passage?

While no classification of rites of passage has met with general acceptance, although many names have been given to distinguishable types of rites and to elements of rites.

INDABA 2018 sees Rites of Passage as a life-changing process offering individuals the life skills, habits and knowledge to prepare them physically, mentally and culturally for success/life.

WHY INDABA 2018?

INDABA 2018 seeks to bring together practitioners of services designed to assist people of African descent to discuss aspects of good practice relating to Rites of Passage as a life-changing and transformative process with regards to life skills, habits and matters Spiritual, Emotional, Physical, mental and cultural.

WHO IS IT FOR?

INDABA 2018 is for Practitioners, facilitators, and those interested in learning about rites of passage programs aimed at peoples of African descent.

Although it is being held in London, England, it is still considered an International Indaba Gathering and as such we expect/have confirmed attendees from all over the United Kingdom in addition to the USA, Canada, South Africa, the Netherlands, and further afield.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Ticket costs range from £20 – to £200 per person for a two-day interactive cultural experience focussing on Afrocentric Rites of Passage processes. (includes lunch)

£20 - Young People

£100 - Unemployed, Senior Citizens, Low Income, etc.

£150 - Standard Ticket

£200 - Not for Profit Organisation + booking fee (Reps from Charities, Voluntary Organisations, and social enterprises

£300 - Statutory Organisation + booking fee (Individuals who are accessing budgets within government bodies

CAN I GET REASONABLY PRICED ACCOMMODATION?

If you are attending the Indaba from overseas or you would like to stay close by, Kings College London University will be providing accommodation at extremely competitive rates.
