Description

A KTN Event in partnership with Innovate UK

Metamaterials are artificially structured materials used to control and manipulate light, sound, and many other physical phenomena. The properties of metamaterials are derived both from the inherent properties of their constituent materials, as well as from the geometrical arrangement of those materials. Though there are many structures that qualify as metamaterials, the most common is that of an arrangement of elements whose size and spacing is much smaller relative to the scale of spatial variation of the exciting field.

The KTN Report on Metamaterials is available HERE

Excellent internationally-leading research and development is underway at UK Universities and Organisations. A previous KTN event in March 2016 provided an excellent overview of current R&D priorities and activities. This event will bring together key stakeholders to address how this valuable expertise can be directed to explore key growth markets, market size, potential for growth and collaboration and new market opportunities in the areas of:

  • Novel Antennae
  • Acoustic and vibrational damping
  • Optics

The event will bring together academics and industrialists – structured with presentations – but designed to focus on funding, strategic interactions, novel collaborations and real product development opportunities – to be first to market.

Innovate UK are interested to see appetite and demand for innovation funding for metamaterials. Is this still largely academic research or are we approaching a point where commercialisation of these new materials is becoming a reality. What areas are the UK best positioned in to exploit this new technology and how does Innovate UK support this community.

We are particularly interested in what new technology and approaches may be needed and where new business models may need to be trialled in order to deliver value add to consumers connecting their innovative ideas to supply chains. The cross sector nature of this area could present significant opportunities in a range of UK manufacturing and service sectors.

We want to hear from anyone with an interest in this area. This may be large, medium or small companies, the access to finance community, research organisations or universities.

The event is provided free of charge.
