The workshop

Industrial biotechnology will provide key solutions to the challenges of clean growth in the 21st century through the transition to a high technology, sustainable, and low carbon economy. This workshop is aimed at those considering or already active in industrial biotechnology research and innovation in Wales. The workshop will explore the role and strengths of industrial biotechnology in Wales, identifying networking and funding opportunities for the community.

This workshop aims to ensure that academic expertise and innovative industries in Wales are engaged through the second phase of the BBSRC NIBB, helping to fully realise the benefits of IB in the UK and beyond.

BBSRC NIBB

The BBSRC Networks in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy are collaborative networks supporting the community to develop world leading research and innovation in IB. By bringing together academia, industry, technology and infrastructure providers, along with funders and policy makers, the networks tackle the grand challenges of the sector. Through pump priming funding, networking events, skills training, and consortium building, the NIBB have increased the output of high quality proposals to further funding competitions, and strengthened translational science in the UK. The networks have been a great success in their first phase, and the BBSRC and EPSRC are currently renewing the NIBB for a second phase that will reduce the overall number of NIBB whilst retaining a portfolio of research priorities that span the IB landscape.

BIOCATNET - Network in Biocatalyst Discovery, Development and Scale-Up

BIOCATNET is the BBSRC NIBB dedicated to discovery, development and scalable production of biocatalysts for the whole IB community. BIOCATNET provides a cross-sector forum with the goals to foster and enhance collaboration; develop skills and expertise; share best practice; define common research priorities; and target funding opportunities in industrial biocatalysis.

Access to biocatalysts developed by academic laboratories, together with the ability of industry to identify, screen and scale-up production of a broad range of biocatalysts, have been identified as major barriers to entry for those wishing to use biocatalysis for Industrial Biotechnology. By bringing together key research expertise from the academic and industrial sectors, along with manufacturers and end-users, BIOCATNET will address key challenges to help shape the future of Industrial Biotechnology in the UK and beyond.
