Event description
In this Industry Insights session, led by global advertising guru and entrepreneur, Calvin Soh, we’ll look at how you can build your brand.

About this Event

There are certain brands that seem to appear out of nowhere and become overnight success stories, with the brand name quickly becoming a feature on social media feeds and in conversations. Think Uber, Warby Parker, Nike, StockX, Net-a-Porter, Sephora, All Birds, TikTok and on and on.

How does this seemingly instant success happen? Is it because these brands offer genius solutions to problems and needs we didn’t know we had? Or is a function of access to big buckets of venture capital or corporate investment? Or a timely emotional connection with consumers that differentiates them from their competitors and drives immediate engagement and loyalty? What's the secret?

In this Industry Insights discussion, led by global advertising guru and entrepreneur, Calvin Soh, we’ll look at how you can build your brand at speed, whether you’re a one man band, a 10 person startup, or the head of a new business unit in a multinational structure. Calvin will be joined by Nelson Yap, Founder of Benjamin Barker and Daniel Lim, Co-founder of Reebonz.

He also authored ‘The Big Red Dot’ with his son Dylan Soh, co-created the FutureMe exhibition, successfully funded the GIY (Grow-It-Yourself) Self-watering System on Kickstarter, and created One Kind House - an urban farming home.

About the Panelists:

Today, the Benjamin Barker Group comprises of fifteen Benjamin Barker store across 4 countries, 2 cafes - The Assembly Ground & Benjamin Barker Cafe and a Multi-brand store, B-Store comprising of an in-house tailoring workshop.

As Creative Director and part of a new generation of the creative entrepreneur, Nelson is the heart and soul behind each of the group’s entities. From designing Benjamin Barker’s signature suit silhouettes to conceptualising and photographing its creative campaigns, his vision for the brand is translated onto the racks and in store experience. Already displaying entrepreneurial acumen as an undergraduate, Nelson sold DSLR cameras on eBay to fund his school fees, rent and purchase his first DSLR camera for his photography classes in his second year at college.

He is also passionate about music, having almost pursued a career as a musician. These days, when he’s not dreaming up inspired ventures for the business, he kicks back to tunes by Jack Johnson, Stereophonics and The Foo Fighters.

Alongside with the other founders, he launched Reebonz in 2009, the same year he graduated from SMU. Prior to Reebonz, he has also co-founded 2 start-ups in the retail and e-commerce space.
