Embracing breadth and flexibility in commercial science.

About this event

Industry Lecture presented by EPSRC CDT in Sensor Technologies for a Healthy and Sustainable Future on 27 October, 13:00-14:30. Dr. Daniel Carney, CN-Bio Innovations to speak.

Abstract: To achieve post graduate qualifications the development of deep expertise is required and this often continues as one pursues a career in academia. In industrial R&D we can sometimes benefit from a flexible, broad approach in order to respond to the changing needs of the labour market, commercial pressures, and occasional setbacks. Allowing oneself to move away from expertise to a more generalist approach can result in interesting career progression and be a route to making a role of one’s own devising.

Biography: Daniel Carney graduated from the University of Manchester with an MChem in Chemistry and stayed at the institution to complete a PhD in Inorganic Materials Chemistry, specialising in the synthesis of metal and metal-chalcogenide nanoparticles. Since then, he has worked as a scientist in commercial research & development at a wide range of large and small companies in sectors including pharmaceuticals, in vitro diagnostics, oilfield services, joining technology, medical devices, and laboratory instruments. He is currently a bioengineer at Cambridge-based CN-Bio Innovations, working on Organ-on-Chip technologies to mimic human physiological response in an in vitro setting.
