Parliament is the ultimate arbiter of how change does or does not happen.

    About this event

Parliament is the ultimate arbiter of how change does or does not happen. But it can seem arcane and baffling to those inexperienced in how it works. This can make it seem daunting to those who want to change or amend the law. Similarly with Whitehall and 10 Downing Street, this is where the power in our political system lies, but where to start in trying to influence these apparently impenetrable institutions?

The aim of this three-hour online workshop is for participants to hear from insiders in the central government machine. Our trainers will draw on personal experience of working in parliament, no.10 and Whitehall, all pivotal to the policy-making and legislative process, to help you understand how central government works, and how you can go about influencing it.

Our trainers are Jo Gibbons, who has worked in the House of Lords, Cabinet Office and 10 Downing Street, and Deb Hermer, an ex-senior Whitehall civil servant. They will be joined by Abdi Mohamed, Parliamentary Researcher and Advisor to Vicky Foxcroft MP, the Shadow Minister for Disabled People.

    Participants will:

    • Understand the role of parliament, no.10 and Whitehall
    • Examine methods of achieving change through these key institutions
    • Learn what it’s like to be on the inside, and the basic dos and don’ts of influencing MPs, ministers and civil servants

    Who is this workshop for?

    • Anyone who seeks to influence parliament and the legislative process
    • Those who want to better understand the workings of central government
    • Those whose campaigning has turned to lobbying and who want to understand what persuades politicians and civil servants
