Dr Claire Neil
University of Stirling, Research Fellow, KE Fellow, Research in Remote Sensing and Oceanography
Claire is a Research Fellow at the University of Stirling where her research specialises in the development of remote sensing algorithms for water quality assessment in optically complex waters including lakes, estuaries and coastal zones. She has particular interest in adapting remote sensing technologies to monitor inland and coastal waters from a regulatory standpoint to enable UK regulators and industry to fully exploit the advantages that Earth Observation can offer for comprehensive water quality monitoring. Her expertise includes underwater optical modelling, radiative transfer physics, image/signal processing and algorithm development. Having completed a PhD in Environmental Optics at the University of Strathclyde, Claire undertook a CNES Research Fellowship at Laboratoire d'océanographie de Villefranche (LOV) in the South of France. She returned to Scotland in 2013 where she took up a position of Data Analyst and Modeller at the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. It was here that her interest in developing satellite applications for end-users grew and she has since focussed her research on generating algorithms capable of accurately estimating water quality parameters in UK lakes and reservoirs.
Professor Sandra Adams
Professor Alexandra (Sandra) Adams is Head of Fish Health and leads the Immunology and Vaccinology Group at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling. She graduated from the University of Glasgow (BSc) and University College London (PhD) in Biochemistry and then moved to University of Stirling as the aquaculture industry was just beginning to expand in the UK. She has worked on the development of fish vaccines and rapid diagnostic tests since 1985 and is the founder and CEO of Aquatic Diagnostics Ltd.
Professor Adams has published over 180 papers and has supervised 45 PhD students. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, Honorary Professor and Board member of Guangzoug Ocean University China, is a member of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate Aquaculture Working Group on control of antibiotic use, is the Immunology Group Leader of the European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform for Fish Health. sits on the Steering Group of the Gill Health Initiative and the BBSRC/NERC Veterinary Vaccinology network. She is also a board member of the newly formed International Veterinary Vaccinology Network, funded by MRC, BBSRC and GCRF.
About the Ingenious Women Scotland programme
Ingenious Women is a programme which empowers female researchers to take control of their careers. It was founded by Janet Wilkinson and Sara Shinton and the programme has been run four times in previous years by the University of Edinburgh. Due to the success of the programme, it is now going national and Ingenious Women Scotland will run for the first time in 2018.
This is one of a series of five short networking events that will be held around the country in Aberdeen, Stirling, Dundee and Edinburgh in the spring of 2018. These networking events will be followed by a series of three residential weekends, where there is space provided for learning, discussion, reflection and creativity, away from work and home life. The networking events are open to all; for more information about the programme and how to apply for the residential weekends please visit the Ingenious Women website.
We hope that you can join us for the event!
