About the programme

Ingenious Women is a programme that empowers women in STEM roles to take control of their professional development and careers. The programme was founded by Janet Wilkinson and Sara Shinton and it has run four times in previous years at the University of Edinburgh. Due to the success of the programme, it is now going national and Ingenious Women Scotland will run for the first time in 2018**.

Ingenious Women Scotland is a residential programme held over three weekends. These will be held in April, May and June 2018 (one weekend per month) and the themes for each weekend are creativity, cash and control, respectively. Due to the high demand for places, we operate an application process which will be open from Friday, 9th February at 9am and will close at 5pm on 15th March.

**Please note that we are also holding five short networking events around Scotland in February and March 2018 and these are open to all and require no application process. For more information see our networking event page.

Please note the Ingenious Women weekends is a three part programme spread over three weekends and participants are expected to attend all three weekends.

Programme dates:

20.04.18 - 22.04.18     Weekend 1 - Creativity

26.05.18 - 27.05.18     Weekend 2 - Cash

23.06.18 - 24.06.18:    Weekend 3 - Control

Application deadline: 5pm, 15th March

Residential weekend programme

The residential weekends will be open for applications in February 2018. There are 30 places available and we expect participants to attend all three weekends (due to the limited number of places available, preference will be given to those who can attend all three weekends).

Weekend 1: Theme - Creativity

Creativity is a set of behaviours which can be easily learnt and applied in everyday life. Learn how to boost your own creativity, understand more about the creative strengths you have and develop a strategy to improve your innovative approach.

Dates: Friday 20th April (from 4.30pm) - Sunday 22nd April (finish at 4pm)

Weekend 2: Theme - Cash

What is your attitude to money and finance? The initial focus of this workshop will be to explore and understand your own attitudes and behaviours with money and then to develop the most effective approaches. You will learn how to value and cost your ideas, be they for a business, research project or your own time. We’ll cover how money can be found to fund projects, how it can be managed and explore your own feelings about risk.

Dates: Saturday 26th May - Sunday 27th May

Weekend 3: Theme - Control

Managing a career is challenging. We may not always feel that we can control our environment, the people around us or even ourselves. This workshop will help you to articulate your career vision and work out how to achieve it. We will look at how to work effectively with others to help you secure your vision. Techniques will include negotiation, relationship building, self-awareness and priority setting.

Dates: Saturday 23rd June - Sunday 24th June

This is an excellent opportunity to meet other women from all around Scotland. The programme is open to all women in Scotland working in STEM roles in all organisations including academia, industry, SMEs, startups and the NHS. All of the events are free of charge to attend and you are welcome to attend any or all of the short networking events mentioned above. Due to the high demand for places on the residential weekend programme, this will require a separate application process.

Eligibility for the weekend programme

  • Must be a woman working in a STEM role (academia, industry or other)

  • Must be working in Scotland

  • Early to mid-career stage

  • Ideally must be able to attend all three weekends

*Please note that we can offer a childcare option at the weekends if required.

"The course was excellent and well worthwhile. It has made a huge difference to my self-confidence and my career aspirations and given me the confidence to recognise my potential and consider more ambitious careers than I would have done prior to the course."

"This is easily the most enjoyable, the most empowering and the most effective course I've ever been on. I'm extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of this."

“I have the feeling that the Ingenious Women course was a starting point for me for a great adventure in life and career. I would strongly encourage all women in research to attend it.”

“Having time to think, reflect and chat about important issues relating to my working life and relationships, guided by helpful activities with a group of really interesting and confident women.”
