CPD accredited Theoretical training to support Pharmacists, AHP's, A'Ps and HCSW's to administer flu vaccines via MS Teams

About this event

This training course will enable Pharmacists, AHP's, APs, HCSW's and other clinical staff working in General Practice to administer influenza vaccine to adults under the supervision of a registered member of staff.

Practical training and evidence of competence must be supported and confirmed by a RN or GP before the attendee can administer any vaccine.

This training ONLY cover administration of flu vaccines - it DOES NOT cover nasal flu, pneumonia, shingles or B12 administration.

BLS training will be provided by the employer

Supervisors should refer to National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training of Healthcare Support Workers (2015).

Content of this session to include:

  • The aims of the current influenza vaccine policy
  • The immune response to influenza vaccines and how they work
  • Vaccine preventable diseases – influenza,
  • The different types of influenza vaccines, their composition and the indications and contraindications for influenza vaccines
  • Current issues relating to influenza vaccines
  • Communication with patients about influenza vaccines
  • Legal issues including consent and use of Patient Specific Directions (PSDs)
  • Anaphylaxis, basic life support (theory) and adverse reactions
  • Documentation, record keeping and reporting
  • Strategies for the effective organisation of vaccination sessions
  • Storage and handling of vaccines
  • Correct administration of vaccines - practical session and competence to be supported in clinical practice
  • The role of the HCSW as an immuniser (to include: role limitations, the role of others in immunisation)
  • Support for the HCSW eg supervision, mentorship and reflection

On completion of this session the attendee will be provided with competency documents to be completed in practice with a suitable mentor / supervisor.

The employer will provide a supervisor who is responsible for teaching and supervising administration of the influenza vaccine
