About this event

A workshop challenging northern stereotypes through poetry, hosted by Abbi Senior and Hannah Robinson-Wright of Ink Spill, followed by an open mic.

Northerners have long been defined by the stereotypes that surround them, the most common being their landscape, industrial connections and ‘no nonsense’ approach to life. Whilst northerners typically perceive this as cause for celebration, there is a general feeling that these presumptions are intended to reflect negatively on the area, as is often seen within the media.

As a way to explore these ideas creatively, the Ink Spill team are proud to bring a poetry-specific workshop and open mic based on the theme of ‘moors, mills and misers’ to the Huddersfield Literature Festival programme. Hosted by Abbi Senior and Hannah Robinson-Wright, this event will encourage you to challenge northern stereotypes by interacting with work inspired by the north, before completing a variety of creative exercises exploring the area that has produced some of the best-known figures in English literature.

Whether you are completely new to writing, have existing work you would like to share, or just want to experiment with words, this event welcomes you with open arms. We will be using craft, word association and collaborative exercises to create poetry which can then be shared with the group at the end of the session, during our friendly open mic.

Ink Spill is a Huddersfield-based poetry organisation which was founded in 2022 with the purpose of bringing together local creatives with a shared love of literature. They hold monthly poetry evenings which explore different themes and topics through creative workshop activities, culminating in a poetry-specific open mic. In 2023, they hosted their first poetry festival with great success, a feat they hope to repeat later on this year.
