Event description

Description

Should we simply accept that private sector trade union membership is in permanent decline? And if not, what do we need to do about it?

The Fabian Society’s Changing Work Centre, in partnership with Community, is conducting research into how private sector unions can overcome the challenges of a rapidly changing world of work, shifting attitudes to collectivism in the workplace, and a tough legislative environment to grow membership.

Trade union membership as a proportion of the UK private sector workforce is at its lowest since records began in the 1990s, reflecting the decline of trade union membership across Europe since the late 1970s. Despite this, many unions are reaching out to prospective members in new areas of industry. New schemes such as Community’s services for freelancers and Unite’s ‘bogus self-employment unit’ are building on the longstanding success of private sector unions – from Bectu’s work in media and entertainment to Usdaw’s organisation in the retail sector.
