Event description

Description

The IPPR invites you to an upcoming conference which will bring together leading thinkers from across policy, politics, academia and industry to set out how we can ensure that the NHS takes advantage of new science, technology and innovation in the 21st Century.

The NHS is facing one of the most challenging periods in its history. Demand is on the rise while the organisation’s allocated funding is not sufficient to maintain current standards of care. New scientific breakthroughs and innovations of all kinds have the potential to help ‘deliver more for less’ as well as drive fundamental improvement in the length and quality of life for patients in the UK.

However, there are a number of challenges that stand in the way of the realisation of this ambition. Perhaps the most pervasive of these is the historical inability of the NHS to adopt and diffuse new innovation quickly. There are a number of reasons for this failure: a lack of dedicated funding for innovation; the size and complexity of the NHS system; the organisation’s aversion to risk; and short term approaches to commissioning and funding.

This event will provide an opportunity to bring together leading figures from government, industry and academia to consider the current challenges, specifically:

• To assess the current state of innovation in the NHS and understand the impact of the recent election and Brexit on the government's innovation agenda including the Accelerated Access Review (AAR) and the life sciences element of the Industrial Strategy.

• To reinvigorate the wider innovation agenda with a focus on establishing the long term reform and funding needed - and the positive public facing case for it - to ensure that our health and care services ‘keep up with the science’.
