Event description

Description

UK businesses can apply for a share of up to £20 million to research technologies and business models that develop future Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) products and services.

The Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) are providing total funding of £20 million for innovative projects that develop future V2G products, services and knowledge.

This competition, run by Innovate UK, will support a range of Feasibility, Collaborative R&D and Demonstrator projects.

Background: The electrification of transport is a cornerstone of the long-term policy to decarbonise transport in the UK with the Government Manifesto commitment that every new car and van to be zero emission by 2050. This will be through a mix of solutions, from pure battery vehicles, plug in hybrids, to those powered by hydrogen and fuel cells. This challenge brings together the power sector and the transport sector, two energy goliaths of the modern world, for the very first time. Achieving this convergence in a way that provides a win-win outcome to both sides is critical, both to deliver positive user experiences for vehicle users and drive vehicle uptake on the one side, and to enable a low cost reliable power system on the other.

Vehicle-to-grid (or vehicle-to-building) is believed to be a valuable contributor to this, rewarding vehicle users for grid support at times of need or times of opportunity and engaging energy users in the energy system in new ways. This represents opportunities for innovators to create end to end solutions that will enable this to take place seamlessly while still delivering the utility vehicle owners expect.

About the event: The event, hosted by the Knowledge Transfer Network aims to:

  • Provide details of the V2G competition’s scope and funding
  • Ensure the delegates are briefed on the competition rules and governance as well as best practice when applying
  • A facilitated networking programme from the KTN that maximises your chances of securing suitable collaborators for your ideas
  • A presentation will be given that outlines how the KTN can assist you in the run up to the competition deadline
  • The opportunity to maximise your organisation profile
  • A session will be operated to allow you to pitch your idea to the room
  • Innovate UK and KTN staff associated with the competition will be on hand for 1:1 clarification questions and wider System Integration innovation discussions you may have.

Who should attend: This event will benefit innovators and researchers planning to submit applications into the Vehicle-to-Grid competition. We welcome business of all sizes and research programme owners looking to link with business collaborators.
