Event description

Description

An open-door event for commercialisation professionals to share information relating to good practice and successful case studies in the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.

Summary

There seems a drive within the community of commercialisation professionals to engage more with the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities in a practical and meaningful way. Some of this emanates from the drive for more impact within the research funding sphere where Knowledge Exchange has led the way, but carrying this through to tangible commercialisation opportunities for which standard Technology Transfer Office approaches have little traction is proving much more challenging.

Oxford University Innovation will host and facilitate an event for commercialisation professionals to come together and share knowledge about their successes and good practice in commercialisation from the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. This is open to staff in all Universities who may have an interest in this nascent area.

This is expected to be a highly interactive event. There is no fee for participation.

Programme will include:

The programme will include a mixture of presentations and facilitated discussions to address key themes and share best practice.

Topics include:

• ESRC – a funder’s view of how we can support commercialisation of AHSS

• Findings from Oxford University Innovation’s recent review of best practice

• Case studies, lessons and insights from attendees (proposals welcome)

• Facilitated discussions on key themes:

Engaging the Research Base – What are the cultural differences/perceptions of commercialisation? How should we be defining and communicating what we do? What are good practice approaches to internal marketing?

Organisational Structure, Motivations and Skills – How can we enable our staff to support AHSS projects? E.g., Staff Targets, Motivations, Organisational Structures, Training, Relationships with other groups at the University

Funding – What types of funding exists for commercialisation of AHSS projects? What is it used for, and is available funding fit for purpose? What alternatives are there, or what differences do we need to consider? (e.g., Crowdfunding, IAA, Others) How is the TTO office funded (e.g., patent subvention) and should the university make a part of this toward supporting other disciplines?

Scope of Services & Offerings – What types of IP are likely to emerge from AHSS, what value can the TTO add, and how? What are the likely channels for commercialisation, and what role does the TTO play in enabling these? (e.g., Consultancy, Licensing, Venture Creation and Entrepreneurship)? What is the role for Social Enterprise, and what are the differences, challenges and opportunities compared to traditional ventures?
