Workshop 5: Getting started with Social Network Analysis: Networks are everywhere!

About this event

Getting started with Social Network Analysis: Networks are everywhere!

by Yasi Sarabi, Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University

This talk will provide a brief overview of the field of Social Network Analysis (SNA), and insights into how it can be used in scholarly practice in various disciplines, specifically in business and management. Networks as relations between a set of actors can be observed in a variety of settings (Wasserman & Faust, 1994); for instance relations among corporate elites, alliance networks between companies, and co-authorship networks. SNA is frequently used as a methodological tool to understand patterns and trends within such settings and systems. Much work has been devoted to examining how networks influence an actor’s performance, behaviour, and attitudes.

In this talk, we discuss how you can get started with SNA, more specifically the data required for an SNA analysis, along with an overview of the key tools and software packages available to you. Some examples from business and management studies will also be demonstrated, to show the extent and applicability of SNA.

About the Speaker:

Yasi is currently an Assistant Professor at Edinburgh Business School (EBS), Heriot-Watt University, where she is a member of the Doctoral Centre team and Centre for Networks and Enterprise Excellence.

Her main research interests include inter-organisational and corporate networks, international business studies, and quantitative research methods. Her research focuses on the application of Social Network Analysis (SNA) methods on corporate settings, with particular attention to gender diversity, and inter-organisational collaboration.

About the Series:

Algorithms, digital data sets, social media networks, integrated technologies are all part of our everyday lives. How should we investigate the ongoing changes and challenges of our digital society? How should we explore our relationships with digital data and the online world? What are the limitations and affordances of new methodologies and what ethical considerations should researchers take into account as they look at the digitalisation of our lives? The Digital Society and Economy Interdisciplinary Theme Group invites you to join us for a new workshop series where you can meet researchers who will share Innovative Research Methodologies that address current digital practices and phenomena.
