As part of SWAF and alongside the Art BRUT Exhibition curated by Slart, this talk takes a closer look at the life and work of artist Stephen Wright—the creator of the remarkable House of Dreams Museum.
Over the past three decades, Stephen has worked across textile design, fashion, stationery, and fine art.
After becoming disillusioned with the design industry in the late ’90s, he began a deeply personal and ongoing project: transforming his home in East Dulwich into an immersive, ever-changing artwork built from memory, grief, and everyday ephemera.
The result is the House of Dreams—a vibrant, maximalist space filled with mosaics, dolls, false teeth, glitter, and hand-written memory boards.
This talk explores Stephen’s creative evolution—from a successful commercial career to the raw, expressive freedom of outsider art.
Influenced by visionary French environments like Picassiette and Palais Idéal, and inspired by spiritual traditions from around the world, his work is both wildly imaginative and grounded in lived experience.
Join us to hear the story behind one of the UK’s most unique living art spaces—now destined for the National Trust—and how it became a vessel for love, loss, and lasting legacy.
