LAVA Laboratory for Visionary Architecture is an international architecture and urban design practice working across scales, programs, and climates. Their work combines research, technology, and design imagination to develop holistic, performance-driven solutions for cultural buildings, mixed-use developments, exhibitions, workplaces, and urban plans. LAVA's projects include the award-winning German Pavilion at EXPO 2020 Dubai and the upcoming German and Kuwaiti Pavilions for EXPO 2025 Osaka.
At the core of LAVA’s philosophy is the belief that architecture is a driver for innovation and transformation. The studios operate as creative labs where architects, designers, researchers, and technologists collaborate to explore new spatial typologies and material systems. Buildings are seen as part of broader ecosystems—technological, social, and environmental—and are designed to adapt, evolve, and contribute positively to their surroundings.
Christian Tschersich, Associate Partner at LAVA, is an architect, computational designer, and educator based in Berlin. He currently holds teaching positions at CIEE Global University in Berlin and the University of Applied Sciences Kaiserslautern, and lectures widely across Germany, Europe, China, and the Middle East. His work with LAVA has been internationally published and exhibited—most notably at the Venice Architecture Biennale and the Landscape Architecture Biennale in Barcelona—and has received numerous national and international awards, including the European Prize for Architecture from the Chicago Athenaeum.
Inside/Out is a student-led curation of in-person lectures featuring esteemed leaders of the design industry. The series dissects and critically discusses the technologies that are reshaping the field today and in the future.
