Event description
Young Legal Aid Lawyers South West invite you to hear from a range of inquest specialists.

About this Event

An inquest is a public hearing conducted by a coroner in a coroner’s court. An inquest seeks to establish who the person was and how, when and where they came by their death. The search to find out what happened is important for bereaved families to ensure that there is proper accountability.

If a death occurs when a person is in the care of the state, the public bodies have unlimited access to public funding for the best lawyers. The family face an intrusive and complex financial assessment before they can receive legal aid. Some will get legal aid whereas other are forced to represent themselves or use crowdfunding. YLAL’s view is that there should be a presumption that legal aid for representation will be available for families who have lost family members where there is a question about the conduct of any public authority, irrespective of financial means.

The speakers will include:

• Marcus Coates-Walker of St John’s Chambers

• Hollie Wheeler of Irwin Mitchell LLP

We will provide opportunity for informal networking and refreshments during the evening. The event is free to attend but you will need to register for a ticket via Eventbrite.

What is YLAL?

Young Legal Aid Lawyers (YLAL) is a national campaigning organisation which works to support those who practice in areas of law that have traditionally been publicly funded. For example, criminal law, family law, housing, immigration, among others.

YLAL members include students, paralegals, trainee solicitors, pupil barristers and qualified junior lawyers based throughout England and Wales. We believe that the provision of good quality publicly funded legal help is essential to protecting the interests of the vulnerable in society and upholding the rule of law.

What is YLAL South West?

YLAL South West is a regional subgroup of YLAL and organises events and networking opportunities for its members. We are largely based in Bristol and hold three events a year in the city, normally in February, July and October. We invite practitioners to speak about their work and projects they are involved with, with the aim of raising awareness about particular topical issues and sparking interest in different areas of law.

Please like our Facebook page or email us to be added to our mailing list and to receive updates on future local events.

We look forward to seeing you there!
