Event description

Description

Jon Kabat-Zinn's successful mindfulness programme has roots in several different traditional Buddhist schools. In this four week course, Derek will explain how the practice of mindfulness has been developed over the different phases of Buddhism, highlighting along the way, a number of insights which could be applied in a contemporary secular context.

Led by Derek Goodman

Dates and Times: Thursdays, 7-9pm, 28th Feb -21th Mar '19

Venue: Life Care Centre, Stockbridge

Cost: £95

Course Description:

Week 1. Calm and Insight: We will look at how the Buddha taught mindfulness meditation, considering the relationship between concentration and insight and explore whether the traditional themes of inquiry; impermanence and 'no self,' have a relevance to our own practice.

Week 2. The Compassionate Imagination: In the middle phase of Buddhism, a colorful mythology is used to inspire a more overtly emotional dimension to practice. We will look at ways in which we can use our own contemporary imaginations to engender feelings of compassion and increasing confidence in our own resources.

Week 3. The Mind's Inherent luminosity: Teachers in the Tibetan schools often declare that the mind is 'inherently luminous,' implying that our basic consciousness has a natural inclination towards contentment and healing. we will investigate the possibility that this kind of vision can be helpful, especially in the practice of the mindfulness of thoughts.

Week 4. Opening Onto Wholeness: The idea that we are 'already whole,' is a recurrent theme in Kabat-Zinn's work and can be seen as an expression of his own training in Zen. We will look at ways in which we can make this principle more conscious in our lives.
