Description

Inspire Maths Professional Development

Reasoning, problem solving and greater depth

Developing reasoning skills and problem solving skills are crucial to succeeding in mathematics. Is a maths lesson about mathematics if it doesn’t include planned opportunities to reason and problem solve? Do your children rely on you too much to do their thinking for them? How do we encourage children to deepen their mathematical understanding (to work at greater depth)?

In this session, we will explore the Inspire Maths approach to reasoning, greater depth and problem solving with a focus on deep conceptual understanding for all our children. Using materials directly taken from Inspire Maths materials, we will exemplify what good reasoning looks like, the strategies we can develop for problem solving, and how we can easily take an activity and increase challenge.

This is an interactive day where you will be doing the maths, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

Session Aims

  • To define what 'good' reasoning and problem solving looks like
  • To consider what ‘greater depth’ is and isn’t in mathematics
  • To exemplify how to maximise reasoning and problem solving using Inspire Maths examples
  • To provide effective approaches to developing reasoning, deep conceptual understanding, problem-solving and challenge
  • To consider how to encourage children to ask questions and be willing and able to try different approaches
  • To further embed understanding of the Inspire Maths programme and support continuing improvement in your school
