SYNOPSIS:

Competence is the most important measure of a person’s ability to perform their work, however in
the technical learning world we often equate how to do a task as competence.

Are they the same?

The Richard’s Report in 2012 identified competence as the key element missing from
apprenticeship programmes and this led to a wholesale reform of apprenticeships. Competence is
increasingly important in all aspects of work.
“Inspiring Competence in IT”

In this conference, we will consider:

• How can we encourage employers, University’s, training providers and professional bodies
that competence is more importance than task-based learning?
• Is the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) of any value?
• What frameworks, models and teaching practices can really help close the IT skills gap?
• Is Workforce Credentialing as it stands today just taking us back to the concept of Scout
badges or will it evolve to bridge the growing divide between the personalised learning
experience and the more rigid Certification experience?

These and other questions will form the basis of a frank discussion around the future evolution of competence giving organisations an opportunity to make their voices heard on where to add value.
