The Fourth Industrial Revolution - implications for young people and their futures
The fourth industrial revolution (4IR) heralds a global employment landscape characterised and accelerated by artificial intelligence, hyper-connectivity and new ways of working. Whatever the realities and timescales, concepts such as advanced robotics, 3D printing and nanotechnology, to name but a few, have captured the imagination of the public and the attention of policy makers. To many, 4IR holds the key to Britain’s economic success in the post-Brexit era.
Character, adaptability, resilience, acceptance of risk and wellbeing are all promoted as important parts of personal development, but at the same time mental health problems, notably anxiety, depression and stress, amongst young people are growing as they grapple with the inexorable rise of technology, both good and bad, and worries about what the future will bring. Automation has already removed many no and low skill jobs from the economy, but 4IR will render more and more jobs obsolete. Skilled professions including law and accountancy now face the same risks of employment obsolescence that manufacturing has faced for many years. How can young people prepare for this?
Inspiring Futures has long advocated that a coherent, progressive and innovative careers education and guidance programme, embedded into the school curriculum, can go a long way to helping young people better understand themselves and the decisions that lie ahead. We believe that having a clearer idea of possible futures helps individuals become more focussed, more motivated and less anxious.
This conference brings together a wonderful selection of inspirational and thought-provoking speakers from schools, higher education and the world of work. They will look how best the school pupils of today can become successful, smart and well-adjusted adults in a technological world that offers challenge and opportunity in equal measure.
