New Scientist presents...

Instant Expert: Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is now emerging as one of the most urgent issues of our time. Is it a threat or an opportunity? What are the applications that will change our way of life? How impressive is AI, how good will it get, and how soon? We are now starting to find answers to all these questions.

Come to our one-day masterclass and let six leading experts guide you through one of today's most exciting fields of science.

**Early bird discounted ticket deadline extended until 23:59 AEST on 1 October 2017**

Speakers:

- Maurice Pagnucco – head of Computer Science and Engineering School, University of New South Wales

- Janet Wiles – professor of complex and intelligent systems, University of Queensland

- Marcus Hutter professor of computer science, Australian National University

- Dacheng Tao professor of computer science, The University of Sydney

- Claude Sammut professor of computer science and engineering, head of the Artificial Intelligence Research Group, University of New South Wales

- Plus, one more leading AI expert to be announced

Overview:

Like it or not, artificial intelligence is starting to impact your life. Machines that have learned how to perform a task – or a huge range of tasks – better than humans are proving to be an invaluable resource. AI is now assisting with your online shopping, answering your questions in virtual call centres, routing your deliveries, diagnosing disease from your medical scans, finding you a taxi and much more. Soon it may be driving your car and helping out around your home.

Eventually, though, these machines may become more than mere servants. We could end up sharing the world with our AI creations, machines who relish their own existence, accumulate memories and experience their own set of emotions. We have embarked on an astonishing journey, and we still don’t know where it will lead.

Some see this as a coming utopia; others as an impending disaster. Whatever the truth, we will soon have difficult choices to make. Do we let AI make decisions about firing weapons? Is it ok to let AI put people out of work? How far should we go in developing intelligent machines – should we aim to equip them with feelings and a sense of self?

Join our speakers on a journey through the fascinating world of AI and give your own intelligence an instant upgrade.

Topics covered will include:

  • How does artificial intelligence work?
  • What can AI do for us today and how will we use it tomorrow?
  • Will machines outsmart us?
  • Ethical dilemmas of robotics and artificial intelligence
  • The future of human-robot interaction
  • Will we ever build conscious machines?
  • And much more
