New Scientist presents...

Instant Expert: Consciousness

Does the notion of consciousness fascinate you? Join our one-day masterclass in which six leading experts will guide you through one of the most exciting fields of research today. Your host will be acclaimed author Michael Brooks.

Consciousness has perplexed philosophers for centuries: what is this strange mental world that seems so essential to being human? Finding an answer has proved elusive, yet in the past two decades the flourishing of neuroscience has revealed intriguing clues about its nature.

Speakers:

  • Anil Seth, broadcaster and professor of cognitive and computational neuroscience at the University of Sussex. Co-director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Studies
  • Susan J Blackmore, visiting Professor of psychology at the University of Plymouth and author of Seeing Myself: The New Science of Out of Body Experiences
  • Karl Friston, professor of Imaging Neuroscience at the UCL/Wellcome Centre for Neuroimaging and a leading authority on the roots of consciousness
  • Melissa Bateson, professor of Ethology at the University of Newcastle and a world expert in the study of animal minds
  • Plus, two more leading consciousness experts to be announced
  • Hosted by Michael Brooks, New Scientist consultant editor and author of The Quantum Astrologer's Handbook, Science(ish): The Peculiar Science Behind the Movies and 13 Things That Don't Make Sense

Overview:

The conscious mind brings together sensations, perceptions, thoughts and memories to generate the seamless movie of a person’s life. It makes everyone aware of the world around them and of their own self. How all this emerges from a kilogram of nerve cells has become arguably the greatest question facing neuroscientists.

Answers are coming thick and fast from a range of directions. Electrical signals from nerve cells, brain scans and a raft of psychological tests have given us fresh insights. So too have experiments with coma patients, and studies of out of body experiences.

Behavioural science has given us a window onto the mental world of other animals too, helping us understand what is so special about the human mind. And attempts to create conscious machines gives us new ways to test theories about the roots and mechanisms of this familiar but mysterious phenomenon.

Join our speakers on a highly engaging journey through your conscious mind and prepare to have it expanded.

Topics covered will include:

  • What is consciousness?
  • What are out of body experiences?
  • What can we learn when consciousness goes awry?
  • What animal consciousness tells us about being human
  • Will we ever build conscious machines?
  • And much more
