New Scientist presents ...

Instant Expert: The Genetics Revolution

Just over sixty years ago, Watson and Crick described the structure of DNA. Since then our understanding of the code of life has exploded. In 2003, at a cost of $3 billion, scientists sequenced the complete 3 billion-letter code of the human genome.

Today, genome sequencing is cheap and routine, and we are even able to intervene and change the genetic code. But the genetics revolution is only just picking up speed – and it will change the world more in the 21st century than perhaps any other field of science.

Come to our one-day masterclass and let six leading experts guide through one of the most important fields in science.

Overview:

Genetics is the study of genes and heredity. It is concerned with how the recipe of genes written in DNA gets turned into living things: it is the nature on which nurture works to produce us. The recipe is the genome – the set of all the genes possessed by an organism – and it is fantastically complex.

Yet we are unravelling it. We are learning which genes code for which proteins, and how that influences how organisms work and even how they behave. We can read the genomes of extinct animals, including those of ancient humans. And now we have the tools to easily write DNA into genomes, as well as read it.

It means we’ll be able to make microorganisms able to produce medicine and fuel, and design plants and animals with a genetic make up specialised for particular tasks. Humans are by no means exempt from this. The new genetics will change the world, and could challenge what it means to be human.

Topics covered will include:

  • CRISPR - what is it? How does it work and how could it revolutionise healthcare?
  • What can we tell about human evolution from ancient DNA?
  • Can we genetically engineer humans? Should we?
  • Synthetic biology
  • plus much, much more

Speakers:

  • Helen O'Neill, Lecturer in reproductive and molecular genetics at University College London
  • Plus five more amazing speakers still to be announced
  • You will be guided through the day by a New Scientist host
