New Scientist presents...

Instant Expert: The Universe

How did it all begin? Where is it all going? A little over a century ago, a young Albert Einstein presented his general theory of relativity to the world and utterly transformed our understanding of the universe. His theory changed the way we think about space and time, revealed how our universe has been expanding from a hot dense state called the big bang and predicted black holes. But physicists today look beyond his theory to explore how ideas from particle physics and quantum mechanics can unlock the remaining mysteries of the universe.

At this event, six expert speakers will guide you through the origins and history of the universe, and introduce you to the latest attempts at predicting the fate of everything that exists. Learn what the new science of neutrinos, gravitational waves and the Higgs boson reveal about our incomplete understanding of the universe, and how we might one day arrive at the ultimate theory of everything.

Topics covered will include:

  • Why the big bang was not the beginning
  • What really happened at the big bang
  • What is the universe made of?
  • First stars and earliest galaxies
  • Cosmic darkness: the universal Dark Ages
  • How fast is the cosmos expanding?
  • The universe today
  • How will the universe end?
  • And more

Speakers:

  • Susan Cartwright particle physicist, University of Sheffield
  • Eugene Lim – physicist, King’s College London
  • Kathy Romer – astrophysicist, University of Sussex
  • Plus 3 more leading experts to be announced
  • Hosted by Richard Webb New Scientist features editor
