Description

Feel inspired this summer with our INSTiNCT Choreographic Workshop... An opportunity to work with a leading professional artist and choreographer, to develop your skills, understanding and awareness of dynamic contemporary dance styles.

What's involved?
Spend the day taking class with like-minded dancers, learning and developing contemporary technique, and gaining an insight into the choreographer and company's creative methods and ideology.

A fun, collaborative afternoon will further encourage participants to explore their own choreographic language through carefully crafted improvisational tasks.

Who can attend?
Students aged 13-18 years and above, with some prior dance training.


Tutor: This day will be led by Luke Brown, a dance artist, choreographer and teacher, based in the UK.

Originally from Basingstoke Hampshire, Luke trained at London Studio Centre before completing his BA Hons with Intoto Dance Co. He has performed for critically acclaimed companies Frantic Assembly and English National Opera as well as for Ben Wright, Junk Ensemble and Lila Dance, and is a contemporary dance teacher at London Studio Centre and Royal Holloway University Surrey.

Luke leads educational projects for his company LUKE BROWN DANCE, alongside the English National Ballet, Ballet Boyz and other organisations nationally and internationally, and has worked closely with The DanceEast CAT Scheme, Auditorium Ballet Verona and Norsk Ballet Institute Norway.

Luke has been an Associate Artist at The Point Eastleigh, Swindon Dance and South Hill Park where he created his current touring production, For You I Long the Longest, supported by Arts Council England. The company are currently in creation for a new work, The Dandelion Child, which will premiere Spring 2019.

Luke Brown Dance has presented work across the UK and Internationally including Hidden Door Festival Edinburgh, Roma Dance Italy, Dance Limerick Ireland, Murcia Spain and James Maddison University Virginia America and will soon present work at Sadler’s Well’s. Luke has also directed and choreographed works for other companies including Intoto Dance Company, DanceEast CAT Scheme, Grace & Growl and D@win Dance Company and is an experienced facilitator working extensively in education and community projects across Europe.


Timings: 9.15am - 5.00pm

9.15 – 9.30 Welcome by workshop leader
9.30– 11.00 Morning class – contemporary technique focused warm-up
11.00 – 11.15 Break
11.15 – 12.30 An introduction - developing ideas into movement, with a look at Luke's own choreographic style and creative influences.

12.30 – 13.15 Lunch Break

13.15 – 13.45 Informal discussion and Q&A session with workshop leader
13.45 – 16.15 Choreography workshop – creative tasks and ideas to encourage you to develop your own material and create a short piece. as a duet or small group.
16.15 – 16.30 Break
16.30 – 17.00 Informal sharing with the group.
