Event Details

As a follow on from the IHS postgraduate Conference we provide you with the opportunity to make use of the techniques we will have learned as part of the “networking” workshop conference - join us for a relaxed and free lunch, while using the opportunity to explore relevant links and events outside of academia! We have invited many interesting people from businesses and charities relevant to us and our research. Drop in and out as you want and get to know local and national organisations that are there and ready for a chat, as well as other PhD students in your field.

This event is open to IHS postgraduates, NINE DTP PGR’s, researchers and academics

STILL NOT SURE? Drop us a line at businessboost@newcastle.ac.uk and we’ll put you in touch with some of your colleagues who have joined in previously and they’ll tell you more.  But here's a couple of quotes to get you started.

“I/we came along to this event on. I/we expected to have the embarrassing silences (as previously experienced, at other events, when no-one knows who to talk to). Paul was near the door and welcomed everyone as they arrived in to the room. He then brought people over who he felt would be appropriate for our line of work and introduced us to others in the same way. It was very relaxed and comfortable throughout. I/we made a few really good contacts who we are already planning to meet again. what we took away was the feeling that the organisation of the event had been 2nd to none.  The lunch was lovely too J"

“From a researcher side I think networking is essential both for recruiting participants, but also for ”impact” (our major buzzword) in terms of finding people who can actually use our research and make sure it goes into doing some good for people outside of academia.”

“I also wanted to say thanks again for the workshop you ran. I have found networking becoming fundamental to pretty much everything I am doing at the moment and your advice is really paying off for me both to the benefit of my research and future career prospects. It was certainly a morning well spent.”

Newcastle University has been awarded a top-up fund for the ESRC Impact Accelerator Account, entitled ‘Business Boost Fund’, which is to support new and existing partnerships between social scientists and industry/businesses in all its forms.

The aim of the funding: To align social science research with industrial strategy priorities, supporting a step change in our working with business partners, facilitating productive collaborations.

The funding comes from the ESRC and is particularly focused on NINE DTP PGR Social Sciences researchers, but open to others where we have capacity.
