Event description

Description

Join Dr Priyamvada Gopal at Heffers bookshop as she talks about her new book, Insurgent Empire: Anticolonialism and the Making of British Dissent, in conversation with Dr Christian Hogsbjerg. It is a book that reframes the narrative, focussing on how resistance in the colonies changed British ideas of freedom.

Much has been written on how colonial subjects took up British and European ideas and turned them against empire when making claims to freedom and self-determination. The possibility of reverse influence has been largely overlooked.

Dr Priyamvada Gopal is University Reader in Anglophone and Related Literature in the Faculty of English at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Churchill College. She is the author of Literary Radicalism in India: Gender, Nation and the Transition to Independence and The Indian English Novel: Nation, History and Narration.

Dr Christian Hogsbjerg is a Lecturer in Critical History and Politics at the University of Brighton. His research focus include the ways race and empire impacted on British identity and culture with a particular interest in the life and work of radical Trinidadian intellectual C.L.R. James.

Tickets for the event are priced at £5 in advance or £6 on the door, and can be purchased through this page, by calling 01223 463200 or in person at Heffers bookshop. Please note that tickets are transferable but non-refundable.
