Integrating Culture into Creative Practice with Ailin Conant

Join us for a fantastic session with Ailin Conant from New Earth Theatre, the leading and longest-running British East and Southeast Asian (BESEA) touring theatre company in the UK.

This Masterclass will be on 'bringing your culture into your own work as a theatremaker/director on self-led projects.' Perfect for directors, writers, devisers, actors and performers, who want to integrate their culture into new work.

We are using 'culture' to mean the ideas, customs, archetypes, and norms of a particular people or society. This can be ethnic or diasporic national cultures, but also include any other shared cultures like queer culture, deaf culture, youth culture, etc. Ultimately we will be discussing how to bring your full self to your work, and how to make theatre for audiences who may or may not share your personal cultural backgrounds.

About Ailin

Ailin is a Japanese-American director with a passion for daring theatre that engages audiences with under-told stories in a visual, visceral way. She is the Artistic Director of New Earth Theatre, and formerly was founding artistic director of Theatre Témoin. Through Témoin she produced work in Rwanda, Israel, Kashmir, Lebanon, France, and the USA. As a freelance director she has worked for The RSC, The Royal Court, The Bush Theatre, New Earth, Theatre503, Kansas City Rep (USA), and Ayyam Al-Masrah (Gaza). Ailin cares deeply about working for greater equality and representation in our industry, and is a board member of Stage Directors UK and Projekt Europa.
