Description

Discussing the great "Gatsby" - implications for schools and employers

Making benchmarks 4, 5 and 6 less drama and more reality - developing meaningful long-term relationships between schools and employers.

Running in parallel to this year's TeenTech Surrey, this is an interactive event of panel Q&A and discussion groups, aimed specifically at Schools Careers Leads.

As the implementation of the government Careers Strategy gains momentum, the Careers and Enterprise Company (CEC) are supporting elements of this, many of which are founded on significant research findings that define best practice, knows as the Gatsby Benchmarks. Of the 8 benchmarks, 4, 5 and 6 all involve employer engagement with schools. A subject which can often be difficult to navigate and conquer, from the experience of both parties.

As a STEM based education charity and a delivery partner for the CEC, SATRO speaks continuously to employers and consistently, we are hearing the same frustrations about recruiting the right candidates and being able to better reach young people, before they choose subjects or leave school. Equally, inundated with careers strategies and plans to deliver, careers leads tell us they often struggle to successfully reach out to understand the needs of employers and the opportunities for students.

There is lots of talk about the skills gap affecting the UK labour market, especially in industries related to STEM. You are invited to take advantage of this opportunity, to openly discuss employer engagement with schools: what both parties are looking for, in relation to preparing young people with the right skills and knowledge, for future employment and careers.

Join the debate with our panel of experts:

  • Bryony Playford, Early Careers Future Pipeline Lead, BAE Systems Applied Intelligence

  • Guy Hannell, Director, Beard Construction

  • John Docherty, Director, CBSbutler Recruitment

  • Julie Dewar, HR Director, KBR Kellogg Brown & Root Projects Ltd

  • Robert Pickles, Head of Corporate & Government Affairs, Canon

Keynote Speaker:

  • Alastair Falk, Head of Education, The Careers and Enterprise Company. Alastair is an ex Secondary Executive Head and ex Director of the Birmingham Education Partnership.
