About this event

Community • City & Town

Join us for a hands-on, online interactive workshop where people of all ages come together to create meaningful maps of their communities. Whether you're a seasoned mapper or just curious, this session is for anyone interested in connecting across generations and exploring how places shape our lives.

🧭 What to Expect:

In this 2-hour online session, you’ll:

  • Learn about different types of community maps – from memory maps, smell maps, nature based maps and autumn joy maps
  • Explore what makes a map useful, beautiful, or meaningful
  • Plan and create your own map using simple materials
  • Reflect on how mapping can bring people together and support wellbeing
  • Share your ideas and be inspired by others

🧰 What You’ll Need:

  • Paper or cardboard
  • Pens, pencils, markers
  • Optional: stickers, glue, scissors, paint or a ruler
  • Internet access and a comfortable place to work

🧵 Workshop Flow:

  • Welcome & Introductions – Get to know the group and share a place that matters.
  • What is Community Mapping? – Discover inspiring examples and approaches
  • What Makes a Good Map? – Group discussion on meaning and design
  • Break – A short pause to make a cuppa and take a comfort break
  • Planning Your Map – Choose a place and sketch your ideas
  • Map Making Time – Create your map with support from the Map Murmurators
  • Sharing & Reflections – Share your ideas for future mapping
  • Wrap-Up & Next Steps – Your map could contribute to a shared collection of community stories and places, which may be featured in a digital showcase or informal community display in Spring 2026 (with your permission, of course!) We will also share details of how you can stay in touch with the project and other mapping opportunities.

🌍 Why Join?

This workshop is part of a wider project exploring how intergenerational mapping can support community connection, outdoor activity, and prevent fraility. Your map could even be featured in a local map share event or digital showcase. You can downlaod the map pack in advance: More details about the Project

We hope this will be a relaxing and fun way to chat about maps and share your ideas, learn more about your community with an opportunity to socialise with others.
