Interior Design Declares x London Design Festival

Hosted by Humanscale: Designing for Circularity and Climate Action

As part of London Design Festival 2025, Interior Design Declares (IDD) presents a dynamic event highlighting regenerative and circular approaches in interior architecture. The session is hosted by Humanscale, a global designer and manufacturer of Net Positive 'Living Product Challenge' certified B Corp-certified leader in sustainable innovation. Humanscale will share how circular design has transformed its development process—from materials and production to disassembly and reuse.

This event features three design leaders and a pioneering client—David Chenery and Michelle Pollard-Smith - GAIL’s, Nina Woodcroft, and Erika Suzuki—whose work demonstrates the key actions of the Interior Design Declares Pledge.

Founder, Object Space Place | IDD Signatory

Project: GAIL’s

David leads sustainable hospitality design through his studio Object Space Place, using the Restorative Design Framework to embed circularity, reuse, and whole-life carbon thinking in each project. His work with GAIL’s Bakery exemplifies this approach—minimising waste and material use while creating adaptable, low-impact spaces.

David is joined by a client from GAIL’s, who will share how sustainability has become core to the brand’s ethos. Together, they demonstrate IDD pledges in action: raising awareness, collaborating across disciplines, and evaluating projects based on environmental impact.

Founder, Nina+Co | BIID Sustainability Award Finalist

Projects: Silo | Nina’s House

Nina integrates regenerative design and ethical sourcing across commercial and residential interiors. 

Her project Silo — the UK’s first zero-waste restaurant — and her own home — a deep retrofit prioritising natural materials — material transparency, and local making can coexist with refined aesthetics.

Nina’s work reflects IDD principles such as:

• Product sourcing with environmental certification
• Raising awareness of the climate and biodiversity emergency
• Advocating for inclusivity, collaboration, and equity

Project: The Greenest House

Erika is an architect working at the intersection of climate action and social equity. Her project, The Greenest House, investigates how upgrading existing homes—rather than building new—offers a powerful, low-carbon solution to the housing and climate crises.

A signatory of Architecture Declares, Erika’s approach addresses several IDD pledges:

• Evaluating whole-life carbon

• Demanding transparent, sustainable product sourcing

• Promoting diversity and inclusion in practice and impact

Interior Design Declares: A Pledge in Practice

Interior Design Declares is part of the Built Environment Declares network of declarations, started in 2021, inspired by Architects Declare. Each signatory commits to:

• Raising awareness of the climate and biodiversity emergency

• Driving regenerative design approaches

• Sharing knowledge openly

• Evaluating projects using whole-life metrics

• Advocating for inclusivity, collaboration, and equity

• Demanding transparent, sustainable product sourcing
