Description

(Classes ticketed independently)

School of Modular (SoM) 2018 @ Elevator Sound Bristol

The Intermediate course totalling 10 hours (5x 2 hour sessions) has been designed to teach modular audio processing and synthesis.Techniques presented range from basic audio applications to advanced analogue computing schemes that facilitate complex audio applications. The courses focus on techniques rather than specialty modules. In this way you will learn to understand signal flow and analogue computing tools that allow for infinite experimentation in modular synthesis. Thus the most important outcome of reaching the top level of SoM is deep understanding of the signal characteristics that relate to sound and the signal processing intuition that allows to predict the outcome of convoluted modular patches. Each session will be delivered using patch schemes, audio examples and oscilloscope demonstrations allowing the students to develop thorough understanding of all aspects of modular sound.

Intermediate Course

07/02 – This first class deals with necessary understanding of circuit design and signal analysis focusing on the use of the oscilloscope. Various analysis techniques are shown to give us a better understanding of how modules operate. The spectral response of various filters is demonstrated using noise and sinewaves. Impulse response is used to look at envelopes and springs. Transfer function proves to be the best choice for testing distortion and folding modules.
