About this event

  • Event lasts 4 hours 30 minutes
“My soul is fed with needle and thread”

This is an intermediate sewing day for those who want further their skills. The day focuses on using stretch fabrics & you make two items, a twisted head band and an infinity scarf.

Who is this day for?

This day is for those who are confident using their sewing machine but would like to explore working with stretch fabrics. You may have completed Beginners with me previously or have some experience, however, if you are usure whether you are skilled enough for this class, please contact me.

Details

The 5-hour day (half an hour is allowed for lunch and a bit of time either end of the day for set up and clear up) is held in a room in Westbury Arts Cemtre where we will have plenty of space to learn and make. This workshop is all about immersing yourself in the joy of creativity, ditching perfectionism and embracing the fun of creating. Steph has over 35 years of experience with sewing and making things and is keen to share her love of making and creating, so please join her for the chance to learn, make and grow.

What will I make during the day?

  • You will explore sewing with stretch fabric and become confident when sewing with stretch before moving onto the makes.
  • You will make a twisted head band suitable to wear anytime. Head bands are great for the beach, jazzing up an outfit or they are a practical way to keep your hair off your face when you apply make up. If headbands aren't your thing I will bring sizing options so you can make a haedband for a baby or child instead.
  • You will make an infinity scarf which you can customise to suit your style

Please bring to class:

  • Sewing machine
  • Pen and pencil.
  • If you have a ballpoint sewing machine needle, please bring it as it may be helpful. If you don't have one don't worry as an ordinary sewing machine needle will usually work fine and i carry spares if you need one.
  • Notebook.
  • Hand sewing needles and some pins.
  • Thread - white will do for most items we'll make on the day but bring other colours if you have them.
  • Sharp scissors, preferably a small pair and a large pair, for cutting out fabric.

Steph provides all the fabrics you need for the day.

Refreshments

Tea and coffee is provided. There is nowhere nearby to get lunch so please bring a packed lunch with you.

Parking

There is ample free parking at Westbury.

Testimonials

"I am attending the beginners learn to sew with a machine class that Steph runs. It is fantastic and I highly recommend it. After three weeks of this class, I am able to sew a drawstring bag, a reversible tote bag and a cushion cover with button fastening. I never thought I would be able to do that! After three years of school needlework lessons, I couldn't make anything!! Steph breaks everything down into simple steps and is so relaxed and patient that even a complete beginner like me can do it! I can't wait for the next lesson". Diane

"Steph is a great teacher, she gives you lots of practical and hands on activities where you actually produce something creative at the end of it! Through her sewing classes she has really inspired me to learn more. Steph’s own designs are fun, colourful and modern, sometimes thought provoking. She likes to move with the times, but her designs remain true to her style". Jenni

Steph Thannhauser has over 35 years of sewing experience. In fact, she can’t remember a day when she wasn’t making or sewing something. She started young and has never stopped. Steph did a degree in Printed Textiles at Loughborough College of Art and Design then subsequently worked in-house and in freelance, creating art for many different products and clients. Her favourite thing to do is design patterns which can then be used in sewing projects.

Teaching people to sew and sharing her love of creativity was a natural progression for Steph. She teaches in the Milton Keynes area but is also planning to teach online too.
