'Now the dead will no longer be buried, now this spectral city will become the site for excavations and lamentations, now time itself will disintegrate and void itself, now human bodies will expectorate fury and envision their own transformation or negation, now infinite and untold catastrophes are imminently on their way...'

Stephen Barber

The portal between the winters of 1979-80 (the first winter of Margaret Thatcher) and 2019-20 is an immediate one, with new catastrophes on the way. This event conjures the political and social parallels between the then and the now, between conjoined apathetic populations subjugated by political machinations, inspired by late capitalist ideologies masquerading as issues of sovereignty that are ready to inflict perpetual uncertainty on the masses enveloped in social media. Urban space in transmutation - from Leeds to London, from Berlin to Tokyo - is the sensitised location for that fractured aperture in time. Between the late 70s’ abandoned punk-rock spaces of warehouses, cinemas and subterranean nightclubs, and their 2020s’ contemporary emptied-out high-end counterparts, spectres, cries, images and cacophonies will obsessively pass and oscillate.

For the inaugural episode of INTERMISSION, White Noise Ballrooms will operate as the umbrella title for a collective sensibility, re-imagined as a stimulant for a commissioned programme of interdisciplinary performances that encompass experimental sonic explorations, spoken word and moving-image work interspersed by rarefied historical footage positioned within a site-specific installation. Situated on Cork Street, a key figure in Modern British Art history, which was for more than 50 years an epicentre for progressive and challenging forms of contemporary arts in London. On this occasion, it will once again host experimental forms of cultural activation, showcasing a collection of inter-generational artists, musicians and writers - that challenge, reflect and amplify societal norms and corpus behaviours omnipresent today - to offer alternate scenarios for existence.

INTERMISSION

A nomadic programme committed to presenting artist-led projects that navigate moving image, performance, sound and spoken word at distinct sites across London. Operating intermittently, INTERMISSION will occupy the routine periods of transition between exhibitions at Camden Arts Centre.

A co-production by Camden Arts Centre and 33-33.
