International Archives Day at PRONI – 9 June 2017
In celebration of International Archives Day, the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) invites you to participate in a workshop and a guided tour on 9 June 2017. Join a behind-the-scenes tour to meet archival staff who support researchers or undertake cutting edge preservation work. Bring your treasured photographs to discover how they can be digitised or restored. Ask an archivist about the role of archives and the importance of their work.
Guided Tour – starting at 11.00 and 14.00 (lasting for two hours)
Your guide will lead you through the research areas, and present a display of original documents that reveal stories on the interaction of cultures since 1610.
The tour will continue behind the scenes where you will be the first to witness archival staff sorting, listing and cataloguing new materials coming into the office.
The tour will continue in the secure stores, the Conservation Suite and the Photography Studio where you will experience the cutting edge work being undertaken to preserve and digitise records.
The tour will finish with tea, coffee and biscuits in the atrium where archival staff will be on hand to answer your questions. The staff you have met during the tour will be joined by staff from other teams, including Digital Preservation, Access, and Enquiries.
Digitisation Workshop – starting at 11.00 and 14.00 (lasting for one hour)
Why not make use of the expertise we have at PRONI to digitise and restore a treasured family photograph or special document? As a souvenir, you will be able to take away a digital copy (on USB or DVD) or a printed copy of your document.
In small groups, you will spend the morning or afternoon in our Photography Studio. Here you will be met by PRONI's digitisation archivist who will talk you through the digitisation of archival documents at PRONI and show you examples of work from past and ongoing projects.
Next, our experienced archive photographer will demonstrate how best to handle, preserve and digitally restore your old family photographs and other historical documents. Your own documentary treasures will then be photographed, digitally restored (as necessary) in front of your eyes, then saved and printed for you to take home for your family to enjoy.
If tickets are unavailable when trying to book, please email email@example.com and ask to be placed on a reserve list.
The Heritage Cafe at PRONI will be open from 9.30 am to 2.30 pm
PRONI does not require you to print off your ticket to attend any event. A list of attendees will be made available to staff.
