About this event

IDAHOBIT stands for the ‘International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia’ which is a globally recognised date falling on 17 May every year.

This date was selected to mark the decision to remove homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseased of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1990. Since this time, the movement has gained momentum globally and is observed in many businesses and sectors.

The purpose of IDAHOBIT is to coordinate events that raise awareness of LGBTQ+ equality issues as well as spotlight awareness of the progress being made across the globe.

So please join our virtual event, this is an opportunity for our services to show recognition and commitment towards continual support, protection, encouragement, and development of our LGBTQ+ colleagues as well as giving awareness to our allies of the struggles those who identify as LGBTQ+ have faced and their triumphs over adversity.

During the event you will have to opportunity to hear from the Chief Officers from both Essex County Fire and Rescue Service and Essex Police and the Non-Exec Sponsor from East of England Ambulance Service.

Three keynote speakers, Sarah Jones , Supt Amanda Tillotson and Kirsten Willis will be giving an insight into their personal stories, their experiences and ability to showcase their true authentic selves. The event will also include three shorter break-out talks exploring:

· Hate Crime – What is it and how can we prevent it and report it?

· Mental Health – How does this disproportionately effect LGBTQ+ people

· Labels and Language – What are they and do we need them?

The event will conclude with a panel discussion where all attendees are encouraged to ask questions to those who have presented.
