International Fortress Conference Terezín

From its source in the Czech Krkonoše Mountains to its mouth in the North Sea near Cuxhaven, the Elbe River connects 1091 km of magnificent cultural landscapes. Today, the Elbe touches UNESCO World Heritage Sites, nature parks, biosphere reserves or the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, consisting of Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland.

But it was also fiercely contested and heavily fortified for centuries as a border river of principalities, kingdoms and republics. There are 25 fortified monuments along the course of the Elbe from the period up to the end of the 19th century. 9 of them founded the regional FORTE CULTURA cluster of Elbe Fortresses in 2019 and started joint marketing activities under the umbrella of the European Cultural Route. This regional cooperation of fortified monuments to increase tourism and marketing with FORTE CULTURA is a European best practice.

The International Fortress Conference Terezín will draw attention on today's challenges for the fortified heritage and will present best practices of cross-border cooperation, projects and networking.

The Fortress Conference is part of a cross-border funding project in the Elbe/Labe Euroregion DE-CZ. The project partner are the city of Terezín, the Elbe Fortress Königstein and the FORTE CULTURA Network.
