Event description
Jointly organised by the IFI and the Centre for Philosophy of Education, UCL Institute of Education, London

About this Event

Keynote speaker:

David Bakhurst, Queen's University, Canada/UCL, Institute of Education

Human society is at a crossroads. We face the breakdown of representative democracy and the rise of populism, an eco-systems emergency that has reached tipping point alongside gross and growing social inequality.

What is the role of philosophy in theorising these challenges in ways that point towards solution-oriented practices and activities?

As well as those presenting, we welcome attendance by those new to Ilyenkov with an interest in the themes of the symposium. However, early registration is essential as space is limited. General registration for attendees is open until June 10.

Contributing to the conference

We invite presentations of around 20 mins that take forward Evald Ilyenkov’s concept of the Ideal, the renewed interest in dialectics and the work of other Marxist theorists.

Suggested themes:

  • The role of education in social transformation
  • Understanding the present, neo-liberal period of history
  • Social alienation and our relation to nature
  • Theorising the state and democracy
  • Social emancipation and the subject in the 21st century

Deadline for 500 word abstracts: 30 March 2020. Mini abstracts and micro-presentations (7 mins) also accepted. Diverse views welcomed!

Send to conference organising committee: ilyenkov2020@gmail.com

Everyone is invited to a pre-symposium social evening on Thursday, 11 June. Details to be announced.

If you are unable to attend, please help with travel costs through a donation via the registration page.
