Event description

Description

This free international event will bring together teachers from around the world to consider a variety of different ways in which education professionals can, and in some cases, already do, use oracy-related skills in classrooms and curriculums around the world. The ESU believes that by teaching pupils speaking and listening skills (known as oracy) they can become confident communicators, critical thinkers and empowered citizens. This symposium aims to bring practitioners and education experts from this field to discuss the benefits to students that teaching oracy can provide, while also addressing the challenges of teaching a subject that is often unassessed and hard to fit into a rigid curriculum.

The afternoon will be highly interactive, with speakers launching and facilitating oracy-themed discussions within and between smaller international groups of attendees. The sessions are suitable for practitioners of all subject areas and age groups.

Session One, led by Andrew Fitch (Head of English and Director of Spoken Literacy at Highbury Grove School, Islington): Strategies for whole school/department oracy development

Session Two, led by Harriet Goodman (Life Opportunities Manager, St Luke's and Moreland Primary Schools, Islington; SAPERE Trainer in P4C: Thinking Allowed through Philosophy for Children (P4C)

After a tea and coffee break we'll have a 40 minute, hands-on session demonstrating exciting activities for getting students speaking. This is led by one of our most experienced Mentors.

A short comfort break then leads us in to the afternoon's final two sessions:

Session Three, led by Leela Koenig (Head of Oracy at the ESU): "Debating Difficult Topics" Why you might want to do this in the classroom and how you can go about doing it

Session Four, led by Ameena Khan-Sullivan (ESU Mentor and student of neuroscience): Oracy across the curriculum

The symposium is being held at the English-Speaking Union’s headquarters in Mayfair. It begins at 2pm, and teas and coffees will be provided.
