Associate Professor Panagiotis Pentaris, the International Social Work sub-committee of the Joint University Council and its co-chairs, Professor Janet Walker and Associate Professor Alison McInnes, as well as the organising committee for this event are inviting you to the second workshop exploring global and local needs, a global learning exchange environment, and contemporary contexts in social work. Attendees do not need to have joined the first workshop in order to attend this one.
This is an online event, and participants are cordially invited to join us on 24 May, 2022, 16:00-19:00 (BST).
Workshop 1: Global and local needs: similarities and differences
Facilitators: Jill Childs & Jody Bell, Oxford Brookes University
Overview: This workshop will draw on the themes of 'Glocal' Global and local that need to be seen as interchangeable in social work education and throughout social worker's careers and will also cover the idea of drawing on indigenous solutions to create worldwide common values. Participants will discuss practical ways to take the themes forward into practice and social work education, as well as develop ideas to begin to transform current accepted wisdom.
Jill Childs: As a registered Social Worker of 25 years my leadership on anti racism and the inclusion of indigenous voice is at the forefront of my work https://www.brookes.ac.uk/research/units/hls/projects/anti-racist-university-experience/. I am a winner in the award category of 'Most innovative approach to widening participation in the curriculum award' for the work Decolonising the Social Work Curriculum in the HE Innovate awards and the Most outstanding approach to Equality Diversity and inclusion in the Brookes Union awards this year.
Workshop 2: Developing a Global Learning Exchange Environment
Facilitator: Dr Vicky Sharley, University of Bristol
Overview: This workshop will focus upon the opportunities global learning exchanges. Participants will share understandings about what ‘learning exchange’ means in different contexts, what opportunities learning exchanges can provide globally, and who the key stakeholders may be. Participants will be encouraged to draw upon lessons learnt from virtual methods of communication during the Covid19 pandemic when travel was restricted. The workshop will provide a platform for participants to critically reflect upon the benefits and challenges of engaging in learning, development and student placements, with the purpose of coproducing a set of statements at different levels, and across international boundaries.

Workshop 3: Social work virtual PAL
Facilitator: Dr Amanda Taylor-Beswick, Queen's University Belfast
Overview: Dr Taylor-Beswick will introduce participants to Social Work Virtual Pal - a glocal and virtual community of practice for the social work profession, that digitizes the practice of having a pen pal for professional learning and networking. This community focuses on connection and collaboration among social workers to offer the profession with an opportunity to harness its collective knowledge for the greater good.
Social Work Virtual Pal aims to meet the following goals:
- Support a virtual and global community of practice for social work students, educators, scholars, and practitioners.
- Facilitate connection and collaboration between social workers to enhance knowledge, values, and skills for the profession.
- Encourage and shape the communication and global discourse for the benefit of the social work profession and client systems with whom they work.
Bio: Dr Amanda M L Taylor-Beswick is currently a social work academic at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), within the School of Social Sciences, Education, & Social Work.
