About this event

This module will cover:


  • Identify the political and legal foundations of modern sport and how participation in sport is regulated internationally and domestically.
  • Understand the nature of the 'sporting contract' and how this contract binds participants to sports regulation and also sports arbitration (for the determination of disputes under the sports contract).
  • Identify, analyse and understand the body of modern sports regulation or 'jus ludorem' which governs sports participation (ie. doping, integrity, gender and sex, eligibility, eligibility, selection, conduct [on and off field), game- rule and sports governance)
  • Identify and understand the procedural means by which sporting disputes are determined via arbitration, most usually by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
  • Analyse legal and policy documents which inform the body of sports regulation and the 'sports contract' which binds sports participants to this body of sports regulation.
  • Critically analyse cases which determine disputes between sports participants and sports organisations which arise under the body of sports regulation to which participants in sport are legally bound.

Participants must either have an undergraduate level degree in Law or a degree with substantial law content, or a CII RQF Level 3 qualification (or equivalent).

On completion of the module, a Certificate of Attendance will be issued.


Led by Paul Hayes KC FCIArb (Teaching Fellow and Course Director)

Paul has successfully practised in the field of sports law and arbitration for over 30 years and has appeared in many of the world’s leading sports law cases as Counsel, as determined by the Court of Arbitration of Sport. He has also presided over important international sports arbitrations and inquiries and has been highlighted by Who’s Who Legal in 2021 and 2022 as a ‘thought leader’ in international sports law.
