Description

An international summer school organised by EFIPLANT and hosted by Waterford Institute of Technology will be held in Waterford, Ireland from 24-28 June 2019. The focus of the summer school will be on tools for protecting the forest resource from different hazards. There will be talks, demonstrations, and training in the use of the latest tools and techniques for assisting modern forestry professionals. The overall aim is to provide the very latest information and training in the wide the range of tools and methodologies available that can assist in making informed forestry risk management decisions The course will include field work training with these tools and methodologies for assessing the risk from fire, wind, land-slides, pests, diseases and browsing herbivores. There will be demonstrations and hands-on use of different field tools for identifying hazards and providing alerts to their presence. These include tools based on mobile phones, drones, and computer-based decision support systems. Laboratory sessions will follow the field work to learn how these measurements can be used to make assessments of the levels of risk in the forest and how they can be combined with other forest management tools. The workshop is primarily focussed at professional foresters, forest consultants, managers and owners, forestry policy makers, and postgraduate-level students.

The lectures on Tuesday 25th June will be open to anyone, including people not attending the whole summer school. Attendance at these talks will be eligible for continued professional development (CPD).

Early-bird registration deadline: April 30, 2019. After this date, the rates will increase by 10%.

The Society of Irish Foresters has kindly offered to sponsor the attendance of 2 participants. This will cover the cost of the Summer School (350 €) but not the cost of any travel to Ireland (travel within Ireland is covered by the Summer School). Applicants at an early stage of their career, who are self-funding, or who have limited international experience will be regarded favourably. Successful applicants will be informed at least a month before the start of the Summer School.
