Course Description

Day 1: Getting Ready for International Touring

  • Assessing the benefits/impacts of international touring
  • Where and how to showcase your work
  • Providing the right information to promoters
  • Analysing which market you are appropriate for
  • Budgeting
  • Setting fees

Day 2: Negotiating International Tours: How to Arrange a Successful Visit

  • Negotiations: all the detail from first invitation to signing the contract
  • Negotiating tactics and styles, cultural differences
  • Avoiding common and less common problems
  • Avoiding risk and minimising costs
  • Scheduling
  • Wrap-around work
  • Legal & Royalties
  • Tax, VAT and insurance

Day 3: Delivery of an International Visit and Sustaining Overseas Work in the Long Term

This day is especially designed for those with experience of international working and includes a session delivered by a senior representative from British Council Drama and Dance department in London: a rare opportunity to hear directly about the British Council’s current priorities, working methods and ask any questions you may have about how to get the best out of a partnership with them.

Who is the course aimed at?

The course is designed for theatre, dance, live art, cross-art form and public art practitioners, either individuals or companies.

It will benefit both those who have yet to export their work and those who have already undertaken overseas working but would like to increase their knowledge.

Trainer bio

Kate Bowen is a freelance Consultant and Producer for theatre, dance, live art, cross art form work and public art. She was most recently Consultant Producer with David Leddy/Fire Exit (Glasgow). Other companies and artists she has worked with include Subject to Change (London), Made in China (London), Ivor MacAskill (Glasgow), Dancing Brick (Milton Keynes), NVA (Glasgow), Artichoke (London), Andy Manley (Edinburgh), Barrowland Ballet (Glasgow), Gate Theatre/Dance Umbrella (London), The Work Room (Glasgow), Stillmotion (Glasgow), Unlimited Theatre (Leeds), Arcola Theatre/Iceni Productions (London), Necessary Angel (Canada), Byre Theatre (St Andrews) British Council (Scotland and London) and for many years she was Executive Producer with Theatre Babel.

She has taken small, mid and large scale performances to venues and festivals throughout the UK and across the world in countries as diverse as Canada, Malaysia, The Philippines, Taiwan, USA, Japan, Brazil and India.

She has been the recipient of three SAC Professional Development Awards and an FST/Creative Scotland Producer’s Bursary.

The fees below reflect a 17% discount over booking the courses individually.



Cancellation Policy
We need to secure bookings and commit to delivery of events in advance so any late cancellations or no-shows will incur costs - please note that we will follow the FST's cancellation policy instead of the one specified by Eventbrite.

For paid events:

  • Any cancellation made within 10-3 working days of the course will incur a charge of 75% of the course fee, you will also be given the option to transfer the ticket to another party.
  • Any cancellation made within three days of the start of the event or no-show on the day will still be charged the full cost of the course, you will also be given the option to transfer the ticket to another party.

For free events:

  • A non-attendance fee may be charged if you book a place at an event but do not attend on the day.

Event Cancellation
If an Event is cancelled, postponed or relocated, by FST, you will be offered (subject to availability) to attend a rescheduled Event, the same Event at an alternative location or another Event up to the face value of the Booking price or, if you are unable to attend any of the former, a refund. FST will not be liable for any loss, claim, damage, or any incidental or consequential damages of any kind, which arises out of or is in any way connected with an Event or Booking cancellation, postponement, relocation or other change. Without limiting the previous provision, travel expenses will not be reimbursed by FST.
