About this Event

In celebration of International Women’s Month, the Faculty of Education’s Newman Institute of Leadership in Education is delighted to host this talk by Preet Kaur Gill, Member of Parliament (MP) regarding her experience as a woman in politics and undertaking work in equality, diversity and inclusion.

Preet is the MP for Birmingham, Edgbaston and the first Sikh female MP in the UK. She is Shadow Minister for International Development. In Parliament she also chairs the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for British Sikhs and for Mentoring and co-chairs the APPG for International Freedom of Religion or Belief; the APPG for the West Midlands; and the APPG for Safeguarding in Faith Settings.

Preet was recently featured in the Top 10 inspirational Sikh women in the UK in recognition of her work to engage more women and those from BAME backgrounds in politics, and Amnesty International UK’s ‘Who is Making History?’ list which acknowledges the work of women human rights defenders from across the UK.

In July 2018, Preet was appointed Vice-President of the Local Government Association and serves as a Non-Executive Director for Spring Housing, a local social housing organisation. Preet is also a Champion for the Faith & Belief Forum. Prior to her election, Preet worked as a Social Worker and as a Councillor and Cabinet Member for public health and protection.
