Introduction to Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA)

Dr Elizabeth C. Roxburgh

IPA is a fairly recent qualitative approach which has been used extensively by health, clinical, and social researchers in the UK. It is concerned with trying to understand lived experience and with how participants make sense of their experiences. Therefore, it is centrally concerned with the meanings which those experiences hold for participants.
The aim of this session is to equip research degree students with the knowledge and skills necessary to undertake an IPA study and to write up their findings. The first part of the session will provide a general overview to the approach which will be followed by a short activity (having a go at doing IPA!).

The session will cover:
• Origins and theoretical underpinnings of IPA
• Preparing for a project
• Sampling
• Designing a semi-structured interview schedule
• Collecting and analysing data
• Writing-up
• Quality issues

This workshop is open to any student currently registered on a research degree programme at the University of Northampton. Further information is available from Simone Apel (; 01604 893418).
