Interrogating Our Multiple Crises | Inaugural Lecture | Paul Silverstein
The Crisis of New Europe's Secularism: The "Challenge" of Islam in France and Belgium?
Islam is being increasingly treated as a "challenge" to, and even a "problem" for, rather than a constitutive part of Europe. Muslims today assert their Islamic piety in a variety of ways within their French and Belgian identity, even as they challenge Islamophobia and call for a fundamental rethinking of what it means to be European. The lecture addresses these struggles as a central defining moment for the future of a postcolonial, post-Cold War Europe.
